Based on a recent article by Boston Globe sports columnist Dan Shaughnessy, it appears that some members of the traditional media are starting to let their envy of blogs and new media slip out from under the old guard façade. Boston Red Sox pitcher, Curt Schilling, recently launched his own blog, 38 Pitches, to which Shaughnessy recently felt the need to satire in the Globe here.
As you can imagine, Red Sox fans are not pleased with the representation Shaughnessy portrays. However, he clearly insults the blogosphere as well by implying that Schilling’s audience is still living in their parent’s basements and avid “Trekkies.”
Having read Schilling’s blog, Shaughnessy should apologize for his blatant disrespect of the community. Not because he insulted Red Sox Nation or Bloggers, but because Schilling is also using his blog to generate awareness around ALS. I applaud anyone who uses their celebrity to make a difference and Schilling adopted Social Media to aid in his quest for a cure.
For anyone who is looking to boycott Dan Shaughnessy, feel free to visit this site which “reads him so you don’t have to.” Maybe Dan should start blogging… that’s where the readers are.

Does anyone remember the movie Edtv? Well here is a real life Edtv sort of show covering the life of one man and his friends 24/7. I came across Justin.tv and figured I would throw my two cents in. Being in the social media industry, I think this is a perfect example of how companies need to utilize online audiences to promote their products. Justin.tv has only been live for a little over four days now, but the number of sites linking in and the countries they are located in shown by Technorati, depicts how far this campaign has reached so far. I think this is an ingenious way to draw in a crowd, keep their attention and have some fun while doing it.
Check out this Wired News article if you want to see what life on Justin.tv has been like so far.

Back in November I wrote a post “Playing a ’sport’ from the comfort of your computer chair,” which talked about the ever so popular trend of fantasy sports. Well now its mid-March and once again people across the nation are competing against one another, watching as the NCAA men’s Division I basketball tournament continues down the road to the final four. March Madness is one of the nation’s most prestigious sporting events and attracts millions to watch and even participate.
Companies are finally starting to realize the value behind utilizing social media tools to engage their consumers. Over the past few years, CBS Sportsline has streamed the games online free of charge and have attracted millions of viewers. Commercials are aired during the online broadcasting giving companies even more opportunities to advertise and reach their target markets. Companies are expected to shell out close to a half-billion dollars this year for marketing during the tournament as seen in this Brandweek article.
I signed up for the Coke Zero NCAA Sweet 16 Challenge and even though I don’t feel like going out and buying a Coke, it’s something fun that will bring the Coca-Cola brand to my mind when I think about March Madness. Let’s Go Ohio State!!

Come one, come all. YouTubers are gathering around the world. As One, organized by Mr. Safety, also known as Cory Williams, was created to take the YouTube community to the next level and bring users closer together.
On February 17, 2007 there was a gathering in San Francisco and an upcoming event in NYC is scheduled for July 7, 2007. YouTube members have been putting together videos promoting the upcoming 777 NYC event. There are scheduled events for Sydney, Melbourne and a European tour starting in London.
YouTube has simply taken the world by storm. As One seems like an innovative opportunity for marketers to reach a wider audience by harnessing YouTubers as talents.
